Hitcher in the Dark

Delivering an updated late 80s version of the classic Giallo or slasher movie, Umberto Lenzi (So Sweet, So Perverse, Eaten Alive, Cannibal Ferox) an alarmingly creepy tale of faltering sanity, and unhealthy obsession. Hitcher in the Dark, plunges us into the murky and nightmarish world of matriarch-obsessed serial killer Mark Glazer (Joe Balogh). Spending his evenings raping and murdering innocent female victims, he eventually comes across Daniella who bears a striking resemblance to his dead mother. Produced by legendary schlockmeister general Joe D’Amato and following in the bloody footsteps of Hatchett for the Honeymoon (1970), Maniac (1980) or Lenzi’s earlier work, Hitcher in the Dark takes us to hell and back in a seedily unpleasant, grisly Italian psychodrama.

Galaxy of Terror

Starring Robert Englund (NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) and featuring Sid Haig (HOUSE OF A 1000 CORPSES, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS), this early 80s B Movie, clearly takes its cue from the likes of ALIEN and the explosion of late-night slashers that were dominating cinemas and VCR machines, to produce its unique brand of weird and wonderful science fiction horror. When spaceship Quest sets off on a rescue mission to the planet Morganthus, the crew immediately encounter problems when their craft is forced to crash land on the strange world. But their difficulties are only just beginning as their enforced stay soon turns into a terrifying nightmare born out of their own imaginations. But he’s not the only one on the treasure hunt: others have their eyes on the loot and they’ll stop at nothing to get it… A late-career highlight from Italian genre favourite Antonio Margheriti (The Long Hair of Death; Seven Deaths in the Cats Eye), with a characteristically charming performance from David Warbeck (The Beyond) as the dashing Rick, Ark of the Sun God tips its fedora at Raiders of the Lost Ark but adds its own wild invention into the mix. Night of the Demon

Amid the gush of early ‘80s low-budget backwoods horror, only one lost classic brought together softcore sex, hardcore violence, Satanic sex cults and a limb-tearing, gut-slinging, dick-ripping beast for “the best and bloodiest Bigfoot movie ever made.” (Buried.com): When a group of Anthropology students heads deep into the forest to investigate a series of Sasquatch attacks, they’ll discover an immortal brain-blast of crazy hermits, mutilated Girl Scouts, interspecies copulation and “one of the goriest final scenes in the whole history of splatter flicks” (A Slash Above). Producer/co-writer Jim L. Ball and director James C. Wasson deliver “an anti-masterpiece that moves like a bullet, unlike anything you’ve ever seen” (Mondo Digital) now scanned in 4K from the recently discovered 35mm answer print with over 5½ hours of Special Features on two discs.

Half a loaf of Kung Fu

While the mighty Shaw Brothers were dominating the Hong Kong martial arts scene with hard-hitting features like THE CHINESE BOXER and dazzling us with an aesthetic brilliance found in productions such as LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA or THE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES, writer and star JACKIE CHAN and director Chen Chi-Hwa were cutting across much of the pomposity associated with many of these types of films and offering something much more akin to parody with HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU. Accident-prone Jiang (Chan) dreams of learning Kung Fu from a master, but when he takes employment as a bodyguard at a shady mansion, he stumbles upon an evil witch and finds himself in the middle of an uncertain future. Funny, inventive and clever, HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU provides light-hearted action, some bonkers scenarios and of course, Chan’s patented style of fun and fury.

Robotrix

From the heady days of early 90s Hong Kong exploitation cinema comes Robotrix, a hi-octane, fast and furious science fiction romp, packed with glorious action sequences and bonkers plotlines. When evil inventor Ryuichi Sakamato (Chung Lin) transfers his mind into that of a powerful cyborg, he becomes a murderer and rapist. But when one of his victims, Police officer Selena Lin (Chikako Aoyama) becomes super robot Eve-27, she teams up with android sidekick Ann (Amy Yip) and together they seek to bring the criminally insane scientist to justice. Like a crazy mix of The Terminator (1981), The Power Rangers and of course, Robocop (1987) Robotrix, combines the mad doctor movie with extreme martial arts to deliver a sexy, seductive, bionic tale of lust and violence given a uniquely Asian futuristic spin.
